“There is one thing the photograph must contain, the humanity of the moment.” – Robert Frank

Forgive us for opening with a quote from Robert Frank – the famed Swiss-American photographer and documentary filmmaker. It would no doubt be better if these inspiring words came from Tommy Lee Jones, Selena, DJ Screw, or another member of Texas royalty.

Capturing humanity is exactly what Austin-based photographer Robin Winter does with his one-of-a-kind work. He’s the second featured artist in our series on the Downtown Austin Space Activation (DASA) Artist Residency Program

“The big thing is, it’s helped me not give up,” Winter told The Barbed Wire about the program. “There have been so many moments facing down imposter syndrome that I’ve had to push through.” In his work, a keen-eyed viewer will see inspiration from science fiction, and the faded polaroids of our youth.

“Each frame presents a vignette where past, present, and future collapse into one, creating a visual journey that is both haunting and meditative,” Winter said.

Power, ambition, humanity, and ultimately transformation are themes of Winter’s art — and will hold familiar appeal to Austinites new and old. Our city is forever in a state of growth and change, just like imagery brought to us via Robin Winter’s eye and sharp lens.

Peer into the soul of Austin with Robin Winter as your guide by attending the opening reception of “Moments in Motion: Downtown’s Changing Canvas” on Jan. 17 from 6 to 9 p.m. at 506 Congress in Austin. Stop by to hear from Robin and seven other exhibiting artists and photographers — more of whom we’ll continue to highlight in this ongoing series. You’ll be in great company. RSVP today, and we’ll see you there.
