There’s more reasons to love Texas’ favorite grocery store: H-E-B currently has the cheapest egg prices nationwide.
According to a FinanceBuzz study first-reported by The San Antonio Express-News, H-E-B has the lowest price for a dozen eggs among top grocers across the country. During the week of March 31, a dozen store-brand or generic large Grade A white eggs at H-E-B cost $4.31. A dozen eggs at Kroger, which came in second, cost $4.89. Other grocery stores on the list included Giant Eagle, Meijer, Target, Walmart, Aldi, and Publix.
The average price of a dozen eggs at U.S. grocery chains was $4.91, a 12.3% decrease from the March 17 price of $5.60, according to FinanceBuzz’s Eggflation Index, which was updated on March 31.
FinanceBuzz, an investment adviser company, said it compiled the egg prices directly from eight of the largest grocery chains in the U.S. alongside official reports from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index. FinanceBuzz only analyzes the prices of store-brand or generic white eggs in the report and updates its list biweekly.
Egg prices have gone up since mid-2024 due to bird flu outbreaks nationwide. Over 35 million birds were affected in January and February alone, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Associated Press reported that more than 30 million egg-laying chickens have been killed since the start of this year, leading to supply shortages at egg producers. The USDA predicts that egg prices may soar by more than 40% in 2025, according to the AP.
