U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, who represents Dallas, has been tapped to serve as co-chair of Kamala Harris’s 2024 presidential campaign. The Democrat, who has made waves through her confrontations with Republicans on Capitol Hill, said she plans to rally support across the nation for Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.
“I’ve gone out to the concerts and I’ve gotten on stages with these large crowds where they’re definitely not looking to hear from a politician, and have been able to deliver a message,” she said in an interview with Dallas-based political reporter Steven Dial. Crockett said it’s important to build relationships with younger voters, citing her own strategy of mixing culture and politics.
Crockett spoke on opening night at last week’s Democratic National Convention, and did not hold back on trashing Harris’ political rival. She also spoke about the first time she met Harris and how much it meant to her to have the Vice President care about her emotions.
When asked specifically about how Crockett will bring her experience as a Texas leader to her new co-chair role, she said the campaign will be going to rural areas to “stop the bleeding a little bit.” She says she will fight to show rural communities that Democrat policies are better for rural communities. One example: Texas Republicans not expanding medicaid, which she says has caused rural hospitals to not get resources they need, forcing them to shut down.
“We are the type of people that govern all Americans and I think that’s really going to be one of the big difference,” Crockett said “When we win in November, it will be because we fought and earned the win, not because we sat back at Mar-a-Lago hoping that cameras will come to us.”
