We told you: Texas football is back

After a great start, the Longhorns are now ranked number one in the country, according to a new poll.

For the first time in 16 years, the University of Texas won the No. 1 spot in the Associated Press top 25 college football poll, edging out perennial powerhouse University of Georgia after the Bulldogs struggled to beat Kentucky this weekend.

Meanwhile, Texas rolled over the University of Texas at San Antonio on Saturday in a dominating 56-7 win. Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers left the game early with an injury, but his much-heralded backup, Arch Manning, threw four touchdowns and a 67-yard touchdown run that went viral.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian was full of praise for Manning after the win.

“There’s nothing like being in the game,” Sarkisian said, according to the AP. “Playing in front of 105,000 people is not the easiest thing to do. I’m really proud of Arch.”

Things appear to be clicking on all cylinders for the Longhorns, who are now considered the favorites to win a national championship. That’s pretty incredible, considering that their starting quarterback is hurt. But analysts say the Horns are so deep, they can still go all the way.

“I don’t think it really matters who the quarterback is in Austin; they are a really outstanding team,” said ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum.

Up next, Texas is playing the University of Louisiana at Monroe on Saturday in Austin.

Manning is expected to start over Ewers, whose abdominal injury is now considered less serious than expected (but Texas clearly isn’t taking any chances).
