For 18 years, the closest I ever came to camping was pitching my pop-up Barbie tent in the living room. Since then, I’m proud to say that I’ve (kind of) learned the ropes. I’ve camped under the stars; hiked the Lost Mine Trail at Big Bend National Park; survived a torrential downpour out at Caddo Lake State Park; and made untold trips to Pace Bend, Lost Maples, and Inks Lake.

I wouldn’t call myself a true “outdoorswoman,” but I’ve got plenty of aficionados in my life whose expertise has qualified me to dole out gift recommendations for nature newbies and veterans alike.

Texas Bushcraft Fire Starter Survival Kit

An essential piece of gear for any budding survivalist, this kit has all the basics: a fire starter and striker that work even when wet, a cinchable leather pouch to store tinder, and paracord, which can be used for everything from tying down equipment to fashioning a splint.

Chama Vaquero Chair

This one’s a bit of a splurge at $219, but one thing I can guarantee about being in nature is that comfortable seating options are usually few and far between. Made from washable canvas and weather-resistant wood, this luxurious folding chair will look great poolside, on a patio, or posted up at your campsite.

Sendero Provisions Snapback

While some might prefer a cowboy hat or a beanie, you can never go wrong with a classic baseball cap. Waco-based Sendero Provisions has become a go-to of mine thanks to their fun, vintage-inspired designs like their “Snake Farm” hat or the “Cowboys Don’t Cry” cap.

Slim Pickins Outfitters’ AO Tee

The first Black-owned outdoor retailer in the country, Stephenville’s Slim Pickins Outfitters stocks plenty of essential hiking, climbing, fishing, and camping gear, along with a curated collection of vintage clothing — and their own line of merch.

Pecos Paloma Magnetic Cutting Board

The perfect gift for the camp chef, Pecos’ magnetic cutting board is designed to grip onto your cooler or tailgate (or any other metallic surface), so you can clean and descale your catch, or prep your meal, no matter where your next adventure takes you.

Texas State Parks Pass

Texas doesn’t get nearly enough credit for the variety of landscapes we have to offer. We have canyons, mountains, forests, deserts, and beaches to explore, and too many of us rarely take advantage of what’s out there! One way to start is with a Texas State Parks pass. At just $70 this card grants you and your guests access to 88 state parks. (Note: you technically can’t purchase a pass for someone else, but you can get someone a gift card to purchase their own instead.) Personally, I’d recommend pairing this gift with Wildsam’s Texas field guide, which is full of tons of road trip wisdom, from restaurants, offbeat finds, and detailed itineraries.

Bexar Goods Gorilla Keeper Keychain

Available in a variety of colors, and featuring Bexar Goods’ flying cactus logo, this keychain is the perfect stocking stuffer. With their range of high-quality leather offerings, you can also find a matching wallet or watch strap.

Tecovas Trucker Jacket

If you’ve been paying attention to the latest trend forecasts, workwear is back (did it ever really go anywhere?). With plenty of functional pockets, and a stylish leather collar, this canvas trucker jacket isn’t just fashionably functional, it’s a great wardrobe staple.

King Ranch Soft Cooler Tote Bag

Is it a little bougie to have a King Ranch monogrammed cooler tote? Sure. But loving the outdoors and being a little over the top aren’t mutually exclusive. This insulated tote is great for all kinds of outings, from the beach, to the river, to the park.

Hipcamp Gift Card

As someone who loves gifting experiences, Hipcamp is a great way to let a friend or loved one literally choose their own adventure. The AirBnb-style outdoor stay company has something for everyone, whether you want to book a rustic winery retreat, find a desert escape out in West Texas, or go glamping in a Hill Country yurt
