As redistricting efforts ramp up in Texas, all eyes are on the Lone Star State. Last week, Houston congressional candidate Isaiah Martin went viral online after he was arrested at the Texas Capitol, where he was protesting the Republican-led “gerrymandering scam.”
Martin, a 27-year-old Democrat, was removed from a redistricting hearing for refusing to cede the microphone during his testimony, after he exceeded his allotted two minutes to speak.
A video that has amassed 1.6 million views on X shows Martin falling to the ground while being escorted out by Texas Capitol police officers.
“History will not remember you kindly for what you have done,” Martin told the Texas House redistricting committee. “As a matter of fact, history might not remember you at all.”
Martin has since been released from Travis County jail. He was facing three misdemeanor charges — disrupting a meeting or procession, criminal trespass, and resisting arrest — that have since been dropped, a spokesperson for Martin told The Barbed Wire.
“The Republican party threw me in jail because I refused to sit idly by as they seek to redistrict our state,” Martin said after his release, in a video posted to his Instagram. Martin was arrested on Thursday and released late Friday night, his spokesperson confirmed. “They did this because I had the audacity to speak up.”
Less than a day later, Martin was met with applause when he arrived at a jam-packed hearing in Houston, where he testified in front of the same lawmakers who witnessed his arrest just hours ago. The Texas House’s redistricting committee was in town to solicit feedback on their plans — but, during the seven-hour hearing, committee members faced intense scrutiny over the absence of any proposed maps for the public, reported by The Texas Tribune.
This comes nearly two weeks after President Donald Trump said he’s hoping to gain an additional five Republican seats in the U.S. House. Texas answered the call through a rare redistricting session, which is raising concerns about “racial gerrymandering fears.”
“I refuse to obey the childish whims of a tyrant,” Martin said in a statement to The Barbed Wire. “Texas is not for sale. I’m going to stand up and fight for my community. The people will not be silenced.”
Now, Democrats across the country are pouring into Texas by the thousands — and gathering funding by the millions — to regain their political edge.
The Democratic National Committee said it will send 30,000 volunteers to Texas to “take action against Texas Republicans,” according to a July 28 DNC press release. These volunteers will identify and lobby “persuadable” Republican and independent Texas voters, the DNC said, spreading the word about lawmakers’ efforts to “rig the Texas maps at the behest of Donald Trump.”
And as redistricting looms closer, the House Majority PAC, a Democrat super-fund, unveiled a $20 million plan to support Democratic campaigns in Texas and funnel money into outreach efforts. The new initiative, dubbed the Lone Star Fund, is “designed to flip Republican-held seats in gerrymandered districts,” the PAC wrote in a July 28 press release.
Redistricting is a controversial, albeit top priority in Gov. Greg Abbott’s special session, which convened last week to discuss hot-button issues like flood infrastructure, disaster relief, and THC bans.
