Well, well, well, if it isn’t the rest of the world finally admitting what Texans knew all along: We have some of the best food in the world.
We told you in September that the French tire company (which also reviews restaurants) has finally deigned to come judge our state’s tacos and barbecue — and 24 other kinds of cuisine. We didn’t need the French to tell us how great we are. But they did! Please come again, anonymous Michelin inspectors. Monday night in Houston, we learned who got the coveted stars, along with the separate (but also valuable) Michelin Green stars for the eco-friendly eateries, and the Bib Gourmand awards for the more affordable spots.
The state received a total of 117 recognitions spanning 26 different cuisine types.
For Michelin Stars, Austin got the most of any city, which is notable since Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio are all larger by population. San Antonio, Dallas, and Fort Worth each got one star. Of course, Houston’s cuisine was the most diverse. Restaurants in the country’s fourth-largest city included those serving Mexican, Indian, Mediterranean, and Spanish foods.
For the eco- and wallet- friendly acknowledgements, it’s worth mentioning that in the great Texas taco debate, Austin had six taquerias recognized — far more than any other Texas city. The infamous Cuantos Tacos, La Santa Barbacha, and Nixta Taqueria were each granted Bib Gourmand awards. Con Todo, Discada, and Veracruz Fonda & Bar (which started as a taqueria and still prominently features tacos on their menu), all were recommended Michelin restaurants.
